In 1970, Charmettes Laura Martin and Delores Henry Hastings of the Ft. Lauderdale Chapter, summoned a group of civic minded young ladies to meet at Attorney Delano S. Stewart’s office for the purpose of organizing a campaign support group for Attorney Alcee Hastings who was running for the United States Senate.
The group of volunteers was observed to be extremely compatible. Therefore, in 1971, the compatibility of this group resulted in the establishment of the Hillsborough County Chapter of The Charmettes, Incorporated.
The mission of the chartering members was to promote charitable and social needs of the community. Those ten chartering members were: Juanita K. Cannon, Ella N. Cusseaux, Audrey Dawson, Fifi Glymph*, Cheryl Hill, Essie Renee Jordan*, Carroll McKennon*, Gwendolyn Miller, Veronica Stewart, and Mattie Doris Wilson*. (*Deceased)
The Hillsborough County Chapter is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. The membership continues to feel that through subsequent involvement and service in various projects, we can make a difference.
